Good health is a precious thing that every Christian needs. It comes from our Creator because we are created in His image. King David wrote: “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works,
and my soul knows very well.” (Psm. 139:14) Like a little kid was saying: “God make no junk!” If our bodies are so “fearfully and wonderfully made” why are there
so many sick Christians? Not only that, some even think that it is God’s
will for them to remain sick. This is an unhealthy attitude about good health
that needs to be changed.
The apostle John wrote to his good friend Gaius, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just
as your soul prospers.” (3 Jn. 2). From this, we understand that it is the will of God for Christians to not only be
in sound spiritual condition, but also in good physical condition as well.
The Lord
Jesus Christ is the Perfect Savior and Healer of our Bodies, Spirits and Souls
Our Lord Jesus Christ came to this earth not only to save souls, but also “went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every sickness and every diseases among the people.” (Mt. 9:35)
His ministry as the Messiah includes healing the brokenhearted, preaching deliverance to the captives and recovery
of sight to the blind (Lk. 4:18). He was very concerned for the health of the
people. Everywhere the Lord went He healed those who were sick. Today, our Lord Jesus Christ still heals all kinds of sickness and diseases. By going to the cross the Messiah became our substitute in sickness and pain. “But He was wounded for our
transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace
was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.” (Isa.
53:5) This truth is confirmed when Jesus healed the
sick and cast out demons with a word (Mt. 8:14-17). Today, Jesus can also heal
us when we are sick. Do you realize that every whipping and lashing that
our Lord took upon His own body is for our healing? Peter wrote that Jesus “Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree,
that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness - by whose stripes you were healed.” (1 Pet. 2:24) When we enjoy good health right now, we should be thankful to our Lord Jesus Christ
for the pain and suffering that He had endured on the cross on our behalf.
When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming towards him he declared: “Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29) The Passover Lamb “shall be without blemish”
(Ex. 12:5). Christians are redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” In order
to become the perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind our Lord Jesus Christ had to be in perfect health. There was not a single time in His earthly life that He ever got sick.
The Bible tells us “For the life of the flesh
is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes
atonement for the soul.” (Lev. 17:11). The Blood of Jesus Christ is perfect otherwise it cannot atone for
the sins of mankind. The Lord Jesus Christ was the only perfect human specimen
that ever came to this earth. He is God who became flesh. After studying the
Biblical descriptions of the physical abuse and torture that He had to endure, medical experts agree that Jesus must have
had a very strong and healthy body. His occupation as a carpenter before dedicating
Himself to the Messianic ministry must have helped to build strong muscles in His body.
Ordinary people in that region at that time did not have any means of transportation.
They walked from one place to another. Jesus must have developed very
strong legs through walking. Everything that you can think about a perfect man
with a perfect physique, you can find it in the Lord Jesus Christ, because He is God Who manifested Himself in the flesh. He is the role model that we want to imitate, not celebrities, athletes, actors or
pop singers.
The Lord Jesus Christ has the best and most healthful Diet for Food
In order to have strong and healthy bodies we need good nutrition.
We are what we eat. Have you ever wondered what kind of nutrition our
Lord Jesus Christ had when He was on the earth? He had the perfect physique and
perfect health. He certainly must also have had the perfect nutrition. As a Jewish Rabbi we know that the Lord Jesus Christ kept the “Kosher”
dietary laws. He ate no unclean foods.
Leviticus chapter 11 gives us a list of clean and unclean foods. God gave
the “Kosher” dietary laws to the children of Israel in the wilderness
in order to preserve their health. There were no doctors, no nurses, no hospitals,
no health insurance and no Medicare in the wilderness. If God did not give them
the “Kosher” dietary laws none of them would have survived. The primary reason for the “Kosher” dietary laws is
for holiness. “For
I am the LORD your God, You shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Lev. 11:44) The four
gospels did not give details of the food that our Lord Jesus Christ ate when He was on earth, but we do know what He did not
eat. He was holy and He did not defile Himself by eating unclean foods. You can be sure that our Lord did not eat the meat of animals, birds and seafood that
is described in Leviticus chapter 11. You can be sure that the Lord Jesus did
not eat pork chops, ham and bacon because they are meat from the swine, an unclean animal.
He did not eat catfish nor shrimps. All these creatures are called unclean
because they are scavengers that eat even their own droppings.
Have we not heard Gentile Christian ministers preaching believers can eat anything they want because
they are no longer bound by the Old Testament dietary laws? They also tell us
not to “abstain from foods which God created to be
received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every
creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word
of God and prayer.” (1 Tim. 4:3-5) What they fail to realize is that there are natural laws that cannot
be broken. The law of gravity is applicable to everyone living on this planet
earth. If you jump down from a tall building you will get hurt, even killed. Our Lord was tempted by the devil to do that.
He told the devil, “You shall not tempt the
LORD your God.” (Mt. 4:5-7). In the same way there is a health law that applies to everyone, including our Lord Jesus Christ. Eating unclean foods will weaken and defile the body.
If you eat the meat of animals that eat their own droppings it would defile your own body. Prayer cannot sanctify unclean foods.
The Holy Bible records this amazing experience of Daniel and three friend’s
observance of the “Kosher” dietary laws.
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies,
nor with the wine which he drank, therefore he requested of the chief eunuchs. . . .” (Dan 1:8-10) Daniel’s use of the word “defile”
suggests that he had decided to keep the “Kosher” dietary laws (Lev. 11:43-44). “So
Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, "Please
test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance
be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king's delicacies; and as you see fit,
so deal with your servants." So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days. And at the end
of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king's delicacies.”
(Dan. 1:11-15) Here is the biblical evidence that the “Kosher” dietary
laws promote and enhance good health.
Christians need to follow the Biblical Diet
for Good Nutrition and stay Healthy
Studies have shown that people who observe the “Kosher” dietary
laws are healthier than those that do not. The nation of Israel enjoys a high
standard of health. Not counting death due to accident or killing, Israel has
one of the world’s lowest death rate due to natural causes and diseases. The
healthiest groups amongst the Christian communities are the Seventh Day Sabbath Keepers that keep the “Kosher” dietary laws. It
is more than a coincidence that these two religious groups have the lowest percentages of members having degenerative diseases
such as cancer, heart attacks, etc. Both groups have something in common. They observe the “Kosher” dietary
laws and they do not eat unclean foods. Many of them also eat more vegetables
and fruits than meat. By the way, both of them also observe the Seventh Day Sabbath
commandment. Does this not tell us something?
If you want to receive God’s blessings of good health, you must eat clean nutritious food and also observe the
Seventh Day Sabbath by taking proper and essential rest.
We are confounded by so many unanswered questions. Why are there so many good and pious Christians who love God very much and yet have such poor health? Why is it that some churches and congregations that have so much truth yet also have
some of their ministers looking so physically unhealthy and are chronically sick? Why
are there so many long prayers for the sick folks and yet they are not healed? Why
did God send a Messianic Jewish nutritionist to our church in Houston to talk to us about the strong connection between eating
“kosher” foods and good health.
I think God is trying to send us a strong message. He wants us to clean
up our act, and start eating clean wholesome foods. We need to improve on our
nutrition so that we can have good health and present the whole gospel to the whole world.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon for His glorious Church that is holy and without blemish (Eph. 5:27). Will you be in His Church when He comes? “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved
blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thes. 5:23) So
now get ready to meet your King of kings and LORD of lords! Maranatha!
May God bless you
